An interview with Dr. Jess Moy, Physical Therapist and Wellness Stylist.
Jess, I know from our previous conversations you became a doctor of physical therapy at 25 but quickly realized you couldn’t provide the kind of care you wanted in your “dream job.” Can you flesh out that discovery for us a bit? What made you transition into what you’re doing currently?
Definitely! I think going through my career journey initially, I was looking for something that allowed me to help people while also providing the stability that was often highly encouraged to me growing up. Physical therapy seemed to fit that bill, but what I hadn’t taken into account was the emotional demand and how that job fit my own energy and personality as an extroverted introvert if you will! I quickly realized I wanted to do something that kept the boundaries of my energy sacred, while also still serving womxn in a more holistic way that encompassed not just the body, but their mind-body wellbeing and cyclical power.
Taking a leap like that is bravery, and it doesn’t surprise me one bit that you cultivated that new dream for yourself + went for it! What advice would you give to someone struggling from transitioning to the “looks good on paper” job to the career they feel in their heart is aligned for them?
Thank you! I would say the best advice I can give is — really envision the purpose behind what you’re doing and start from there. Before tackling the structure, the website, all the things that might make it or you feel “legit” you need to know the niche you’re serving! When you find your WHY the details don’t really matter as much because, essentially, everything you’re doing is leading you to the path that is aligned for you.
I love how, like myself, you try to take a holistic approach towards your well being. What does that look like for you?
To me I envision well-being as your outfit — you feel best when it fits YOUR body, needs, and lifestyle. There really shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach, which is why I’ve coined what I do wellness styling. It really should encompass not only your physical health, but also your mental and emotional health + have an element of empowerment that YOU are the driver in this whole exploration into wellness. Just like the uniqueness of you, the approach should mirror that!
During a time when so many of our emotions can be given to worry and collective pain, how do you recommend we protect our own energy?
Some might argue this point, but I say draw a boundary around the information you expose yourself to. While you want to stay informed and knowledgeable about what is going on, there is only so much you can take before compassion fatigue sets in. This is a real thing! Focus on the parts of your life that need your immediate attention, (make sure that you are one of those parts!), and then give what you can to the collective. No technology two hours before bed is helpful too!
You offer sound bath healing, which I love. What is this practice and how can it continue to benefit people virtually?
Soundbath is so special to me and one of the first “woo woo” practices I discovered that I stand by coming from a traditional medicine background. While singing bowls create a really relaxing sound in itself, each bowl vibrates and carries a different tone and frequency that can be used to heal the body, since we are all frequencies anyways. It also is a really accessible way to enter a meditation practice if it’s new or hard to concentrate. If you listen virtually, make sure to use headphones if it’s accessible to really get the effect closer to the body!
Your favorite way to elevate your life right now?
Enjoying good food and wine! While I typically reserve alcohol for certain phases in my menstrual and lunar cycle, I’m only human! I think especially now it’s been important to do the things that feel good, sleep in more, and let myself live a little. Everything is a balance, which is one of the great parts about being a human – we can be spiritual while enjoying the pleasures this Earth has to offer too!
